Discover the History and Culture of Clay County at the Hjemkomst Center

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich history and culture of Clay County. The organization tells the stories of the region’s past to inspire future generations.

HCSCC traces its roots back to 1932 as the Clay County Historical Society. In 2009, it merged with the Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center to form the current organization. A standout feature of the center is the full-scale Viking ship, the Hjemkomst, which famously sailed to Norway in 1982 in honor of its builder, Robert Asp. The center also features a full-scale replica of a Viking stave church, built by local carpenter Guy Paulson to celebrate his Norwegian heritage. Beyond these remarkable landmarks, HCSCC preserves and shares the stories of all Clay County residents.

Visitors to the Hjemkomst Center can explore, reflect, and feel inspired by the dreams and achievements of the community’s past. Tours of the stave church run from April through December, while visitors are welcome to explore the church’s exterior year-round. The center’s gift shop also offers a chance to take a piece of local history home.

Located at 202 First Avenue North in Moorhead, Minnesota, the Hjemkomst Center is easily recognizable by its towering white structure. For updates, events, and stories, visitors can explore www.hcsonline.org or follow the organization on Facebook (Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County), Instagram (@hcscc_hjemkomst), and YouTube/TikTok (TheHCSCC).

HCSCC continues to be a premier destination for tourists and locals alike, sharing the history and culture of Clay County with visitors from across the United States and the world.
